Santragachi Jheel

The Santragachi Jheel, located in Santragachi, Howrah, is a lake which attracts different migratory birds over the winter months and is a perfect day-trip destination for birdwatching. However, the number and variety of birds have been declining over the years due to climate change and increasing water pollution, among other reasons. Santragachi is a prominent neighbourhood in Howrah, West Bengal. The district of Howrah is connected to Kolkata by two bridges across the river Hooghly and is quite easy to access from any point of Kolkata due to its proximity as well as an abundance of transportation facilities.

River Hooghly

River Hooghly, also known as the Bhagirathi-Hoogly and Kati-Ganga River, is a stunning waterbody and an important source of water, seafood and the lifeline of Howrah. It is 260 km long, and the channel flows through the city and finally merges with the Bay of Bengal. It's a picnic hotspot for locals and tourists equally where they spend time basking in the morning sun or taking a ferry ride across the river. This enchanting river is also known as Bhagirathi Hooghly which means - created by Bhagiratha - the prince of Sagar dynasty. He was destined to bring the sacred Ganges from heaven to earth; hence, the waters of the Hooghly river is considered as holy as the Ganges.

Howrah Bridge

An iconic landmark of Kolkata, Howrah Bridge is a massive steel bridge constructed over the Hooghly River. It is considered to be among the longest cantilever bridges in the world. Also known as Rabindra Setu, it connects Howrah and Kolkata. It carries daily traffic of over 100,000 vehicles and countless pedestrians and is as historic as it is grand. The opulence of the bridge, however, comes alive in the night time as it is all lit up. You can also take a ferry ride as it runs between Kolkata and Howrah, from the launch ghat. The view of the city from the ferry, especially in the night, is priceless, to say the least.

Vidyasagar Setu

Vidyasagar Setu is the longest cable-stayed bridge in India built over the Hooghly River in West Bengal. It is also popularly known as the Second Hooghly Bridge, as it was the second bridge to be built across this river. It was named after Pandit Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar who was an educationist reformer and a key contributor to the Bengal Renaissance. The bridge carries the Kona Expressway (or NH 117) and connects Howrah to Kolkata. Vidyasagar Setu was built to decrease the congestion on Howrah Bridge that is located about 8 kilometres away.

Mullick Ghat Flower Market

The Flower Market in Mullick Ghat is one of the few places where tourists can experience a different Howrah so to speak. The lane is lined by vendors who get a wide variety of flowers ranging from Marigold, Jasmine, Roses, Sunflower, Daisies, Lillies, Chrysanthemum, Lotus, Orchids etc., which are sourced from the farms nearby. They are displayed all along the street for the customers interested in buying.

Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Indian Botanic Garden

Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Indian Botanic Garden also called as Royal Botanical Garden of Kolkata is located in Shibpur Howrah. It is famous for a wide variety of over 1400 plant species it has. The garden spreads over an area of 269 acres of land and is believed to have helped establish the trade of Tea in Assam and the Himalayan regions.

Gadiara

Situated on the confluence of rivers Hooghly, Rupnarayan and Damodar, Gadiara is another nice weekend destination. If you do not want to do anything but relax, then do visit Gadiara for great Bengali food, leisurely walks along the village roads and boat trips. The view of sunset and sunrise on river water a scene to behold. Nearby attractions include Garchumuk and Geonkhali, which can be reached by regular ferry service.

Belur Math

Belur Math in Kolkata is the headquarters of the Ramakrishna Math and Mission. Sprawling over forty acres of land on the west bank of the Hooghly River, it is visited by people from all over the world, irrespective of their religious beliefs. The temple is known for its distinctive architecture, which fuses Hindu, Christian and Islamic motifs as a symbol of unity of all religions. Founded by Swami Vivekananda, the chief disciple of Ramakrishna Paramahansa, the temple is at the heart of the Ramakrishna Movement.

Rail Museum
